Baseball Radio: Fernando Tatis Jr. Suspended, Al Avila Fired, Jacob deGrom Returns

We’re back on WISE Sports Radio after a break that went longer than planned, due to a vacation that was unfortunately eventful for host Pat Ryan. From a Bowls Media standpoint, we’ll still be doing Major League Baseball segments on Mondays. But NFL spots will be every other Thursday while Pat saves his energy to focus on the local high school football season.

This week, we chat about Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 80-game suspension for PED use, the Detroit Tigers firing general manager Al Avila, and star pitcher Jacob deGrom rejoining a New York Mets team that’s already playing excellent baseball.

Breaking Major League Baseball news after we recorded, and it’s a bad break for the Los Angeles Dodgers: Pitcher Walker Buehler will miss the rest of the 2022 season. He’s been on the Injured List since June 11.

We were also supposed to debate Aaron Judge vs. Shohei Ohtani for American League Most Valuable Player this season. (I’d vote for Judge, even though Ohtani hits and pitches.) But going on about the Tigers and Avila probably cut into that. Hell, I could’ve gone on for the entire 15 minutes about Avila’s flawed general manager tenure.

You can stream The WISE Guys from 3 to 6 p.m. ET at wisesportsradio.com (courtesy of Mars Hill University) or the TuneIn app. Locally in the Asheville area, dial up 1310 or 970 AM and 102.9 FM. And thanks to Mountain Credit Union for sponsoring this week’s segment.
