Damar Hamlin Incident is Frightening Reminder of Football’s Violence, Consequences

I love football. During the past year, especially, perhaps because I was able to watch without thinking about what I might have to write, I really enjoyed college football Saturdays and NFL Sundays. (The success of Michigan and the Detroit Lions probably didn’t hurt either.)

But there have been plenty of times over the past 15 years or so when I’ve wondered if I should watch football, if I should support it with my fandom, viewership, and work. The sport is so incredibly violent, taking such a toll on the physical and mental conditions of the men who play it. Players are left with broken-down bodies and diminished mental capacity due to head trauma.

It was impossible not to think about that Monday night as Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field and required CPR before being taken off the field in an ambulance. Hamlin appeared to be hit hard in the chest while tackling Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins, though his head and neck could also have been affected by the impact. The Bills later confirmed in a statement that Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest and is currently hospitalized in critical condition.

NFL WISE Sports Radio: Matt Rhule Fired, David Tepper Bristles, Daniel Snyder Threatens

Back on WISE Sports Radio after Monday’s baseball spot was unexpectedly canceled with some NFL talk. Matt Rhule was finally, mercifully fired as Carolina Panthers head coach. But team owner David Tepper raised many eyebrows during his press conference to defend his decision.

Among our other topics: Who could the Panthers hire next? Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder threatens to expose his colleagues if they try to force him out. Commanders coach Ron Rivera is getting testy. And Davante Adams could be in some trouble for shoving a photographer.

NFL WISE Sports Radio: Tua Concussion, Bobby Wagner Hit, Daniel Snyder, Rams Concerns

Going into Week 4 of the 2022 NFL season, there was no bigger story than Tua Tagovailoa’s concussion and his treatment after likely suffering a previous brain injury in Week 3. (I wrote about how the Sunday NFL pregame shows handled the story for my weekly Barrett Sports Media column.)

On this week’s WISE Sports Radio NFL segment, we discuss the latest on Tua’s situation, an on-field protestor getting bulldozed by linebacker Bobby Wagner, a former politician sticking up for Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder, and why the Los Angeles Rams should be concerned.

NFL Radio: Matt Rhule Hot Seat, Kenny Golladay Playing Time, Justin Herbert Rib Injury

With changes to the fall schedule, it’s been a while since we’ve talked football on WISE Sports Radio. But we popped on this week to discuss Matt Rhule’s job security with the Carolina Panthers and whether or not team owner David Tepper is being too patient with his head coach.

Looking around the NFL, we also covered Justin Herbert’s rib injury and his status for Week 3, Kenny Golladay unhappy with his playing time in New York, Bruce Arians getting a warning from the league, the Buffalo Bills-Miami Dolphins match-up, and how the San Francisco 49ers will perform with Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback.

NFL Radio: Sam Darnold Trade Prospects, Tom Brady Absence, Lions on ‘Hard Knocks’

After being off a few more weeks than expected, our NFL segment is back on WISE Sports Radio. (However, we’ll be doing it every other week until November so Pat Ryan can save his energy for high school football season.)

This week, we ask if the Carolina Panthers could trade quarterback Sam Darnold after he lost the starting job to Baker Mayfield. Should the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been more transparent about Tom Brady’s absence from training camp? And how fun is Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell on HBO’s Hard Knocks?

NFL Radio: Deshaun Watson Case, Jimmy Garoppolo Trade Rumors

NFL training camps are about to open, so we’re getting in a football segment before The WISE Guys radio show goes on a two-week break while Pat Ryan takes a vacation. (We’ll still do our regular baseball update next Monday.)

When we return, we’ll get to talk about more on-field, actual football stuff. Until then, however, much of the offseason chatter still concerns Deshaun Watson’s pending suspension for sexual misconduct allegations and Jimmy Garoppolo trade rumors. We also cover the Buccaneers finding a replacement for Rob Gronkowski and sad news on former Steelers receiver Charles Johnson.

Sports Radio: Baker Mayfield, Orioles’ Turnaround, 2022 MLB All-Stars, Thor: Love and Thunder

After a week off for the July 4 holiday, we’re back on WISE Sports Radio with some NFL and movie talk mixed in with our usual baseball chatter.

The Carolina Panthers get Baker Mayfield after waiting until the Cleveland Browns couldn’t wait to trade him any longer. Are the Baltimore Orioles on the rise? Which players were snubbed from the 2022 Major League Baseball All-Star Game rosters? And a quick review of Thor: Love and Thunder. (Longer version here, if interested.)

NFL Radio: Texans Enabled Watson, Baker Moving On, McLaurin Gets His Payday

Deshaun Watson has been facing trouble for quite a while with 24 civil lawsuits (20 now settled) and a likely season-long suspension from the NFL. But his former team, the Houston Texans, might still have to answer for enabling the sexual misconduct allegations resulting from his “massages.”

On WISE Sports Radio, Pat Ryan, Mike Gore, and I discuss the Texans getting sued, Baker Mayfield saying he and the Cleveland Browns have moved on, and Washington Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin getting a top-10 salary for his position.

NFL Radio: Lamar Jackson and Minkah Fitzpatrick Contracts, Daniel Snyder’s Stiff-Arm

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson isn’t following the path of fellow NFL players negotiating for new contracts by not attending workouts and minicamps, or scrubbing all references to his team from social media. But will he go into the 2022 season on the final year of his contract and possibly risk a big payday?

That led off our WISE Sports Radio NFL segment. We also discussed a player who did get a new contract, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Marcus Davenport sacrificed his pinkie finger for his NFL career. Carolina Panthers receiver Robbie Anderson is somebody who maybe shouldn’t post every thought on Twitter.

Sports Radio: Pham v. Pederson, Fitzmagic, David Tepper, Marion Barber III, Tom Brady

Thursday’s WISE Sports Radio segment is typically NFL-focused, but there was one baseball story we didn’t get to touch on with Monday’s holiday. So we discussed Tommy Pham slapping Joc Pederson over a fantasy football dispute, which might end up being the most absurd sports story of 2022.

On to the NFL, Pat Ryan, Mike Gore, and I cover Ryan Fitzpatrick retiring after a 17-season career, the management style of Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, Marion Barber III passing away, and Tom Brady teases Josh Allen.
